Paper 1 — language

Fact and opinion

A fact can be checked in the text. An opinion needs the word that shows whose view it is.

CAPS

Grade 11 · Xitsonga First Additional Language · Fact and opinion

Fact, opinion and bias are different claims.

  • Fact

A fact can be checked against the world or the text. A number, a date, or something the passage states as having happened is a fact only if the passage treats it as one.

  • Opinion

An opinion judges: best, unfair, should, ridiculous. It can be well supported and still be an opinion. Calling it a fact does not make it one.

  • Bias and emotive language

Bias is a one-sided choice of facts. Emotive words try to make the reader feel angry, proud or afraid instead of proving the point. Name the word and say what feeling it pushes.

  • Denotation and connotation

Denotation is the plain meaning. Connotation is the flavour the writer chose. “Thin” and “skinny” can point at the same body and not carry the same attitude.

Critical language is examined in Paper 1. Quote the word that does the work, then name the effect. A general complaint about the media does not score.

Worked example

Xitsonga First Additional Language, Grade 11. Fact and opinion. Use these five examples only. Do not import a sentence from another topic.

Simplified approach

Rule, five examples written for this topic, one common mistake, then a short quiz.

Culture note

First Additional Language in Xitsonga First Additional Language: the marker credits the rule on the sentence the question asked about.

Step 1 / 4

Rule

A fact can be checked. An opinion judges. Bias is a push. In Fact and opinion, separate the three before you agree with the writer.

Phepha 1 ku twisisa, Giredi 11. Xiphemu: “Layini ekliniki yi famba hi ku nonoka endzhaku ka mpfula. Nesi u vitana vito leri landzelaka, kutani mufana u tshama endhawini ya yena.” Mhaka-nkulu i yini? Tshaha marito ya mune lama yi seketelaka.

4. Step-by-step working

  1. 01

A nga humi eka layini. Nesi u vitana vito leri landzelaka, yena wa tshama.

mhaka: u rindzele nkarhi wa yena

Ntshaho wu seketela mhaka. Ntshaho hi mpfula ntsena a wu nge fiki eka nhla.

How we got there

Read this like a teacher at the board. We go slowly, name every number, and say why we take each step.

Explain in another language · 11

1. What is the question asking?

Read the question twice. Circle the unknown. Underline every number and unit. The paper is asking: Phepha 1 ku twisisa, Giredi 11. Xiphemu: “Layini ekliniki yi famba hi ku nonoka endzhaku ka mpfula. Nesi u vitana vito leri landzelaka, kutani mufana u tshama endhawini ya yena.” Mhaka-nkulu i yini? Tshaha marito ya mune lama yi seketelaka.

In other words — as if you have never seen this before

If you have never seen this before: Mhaka-nkulu yi le xiphemwini hinkwaxo, a yi le ka rito rin'we. Ntshaho wu fanele ku huma etsalweni. We will name a method in words, write the formula with no numbers, then substitute one line at a time.

2. What do we already know?

xiphemu xo leha

3. Which method — and why this one?

Mhaka-nkulu yi le xiphemwini hinkwaxo, a yi le ka rito rin'we. Ntshaho wu fanele ku huma etsalweni.

4. Step-by-step working

  1. 01 / 06

    Nhla

A nga humi eka layini. Nesi u vitana vito leri landzelaka, yena wa tshama.

mhaka: u rindzele nkarhi wa yena

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  2. 02 / 06

    Tirhisa nawu

Tshaha ntsena leswi tsariweke: “u vitana vito leri landzelaka”.

    ntshaho

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  3. 03 / 06

    Kambela

Ntshaho wu seketela mhaka. Ntshaho hi mpfula ntsena a wu nge fiki eka nhla.

    ntshaho wa fambelana

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  4. 04 / 06

    Step G — Sense-check the size

Ask: is this the kind of number a Grade 10–12 paper would want? A speed of 3 000 ms for a learner walking, or a probability bigger than 1, means a unit or algebra slip. Estimate first: round the numbers and do the sum in your head.

Why this step: Markers write ‘unrealistic’ in the margin when the method is right but the size is wild. A 10-second head check often finds a missing 10² or a unit that never changed.

  5. 05 / 06

Step F — Box the answer with its unit

Mufana u tshama eka layini ku fikela vito ra yena ri vitaniwa. Vumbhoni: “u vitana vito leri landzelaka”.

Why this step: A number without a unit is half a mark on a Physics paper, and a marker can miss a Maths answer that is buried in working.

  6. 06 / 06

Step H — What the marker is looking for

On an NSC memo you usually earn: (1) a method mark for naming the right formula or idea in words, (2) an accuracy mark for substituting the given numbers with units, (3) an accuracy mark for the boxed answer with its unit. Write those three lines even if you are unsure of the arithmetic — blank pages score zero.

Why this step: First-timers chase the final number and leave the method blank. The memo still pays out for the idea and the substitution even when the last line is wrong.

5. The answer

Mufana u tshama eka layini ku fikela vito ra yena ri vitaniwa. Vumbhoni: “u vitana vito leri landzelaka”.

6. Check it like a marker

U nga engeteli nyimpi, xifaniso kumbe matitwelo lama nga vuriwangiki. Timaraka ta ku twisisa ti tshama endzeni ka tsalwa.

7. A trap first-timers fall into

First-timers often grab the first formula they remember, mix units (cm with m, minutes with seconds), or drop a minus sign. Write the formula in words first: “this equals that, because…”
